Examination Frequency Requirements

LOLER requires lifts and lifting equipment to undergo statutory thorough examinations at prescribed intervals or in accordance with a Written Scheme of Examination. Passenger lifts are normally examined every six months, helping duty holders maintain statutory compliance, identify safety-critical defects and manage risk.

Passenger Lifts in Use

Passenger lifts used to carry people must normally be thoroughly examined at intervals not exceeding six months, unless examined in accordance with a Written Scheme of Examination drawn up by a competent person.

Newly Installed or Substantially Altered Lifts

A thorough examination may be required before first use, following installation or after a substantial alteration. The requirements depend on the lift’s conformity documentation and the nature of the work undertaken.

Following Exceptional Circumstances

A further thorough examination is required following exceptional circumstances liable to jeopardise the safety of the lifting equipment. This may include damage or failure, prolonged disuse, major modification, or significant repair or replacement work affecting safety-critical components.
